Sure flash may look nice, but did you know it is almost invisible to search engines like Google? Probably not. The problem is in how flash displays your content. Google reads text and site code (HTML), images and flash are often invisible to search engines. Flash is a useful tool, it can make a site look amazing. However, the tradeoff is sometimes steep. This can be avoided by making a HTML (flash free) version of your site available as well. This affect can also be achieved by adding flash elements and animations but keeping your site based in HTML. Allow me to demonstrate.

Below are two images, one properly formatted and one incorrectly formatted.

Ice cubes melting on a dark surface.

Above, you can see a picture of ice. The image is displayed as well as a text description identifying the content of the image. This will be interpreted by google as a webpage showing a picture of ice. Although google cannot see the image, it can read the text description.

Above, is the same picture with text overlaid in the image. Because google cannot read the text displayed inside the image and there is no text description, it is not catalogued in Google’s directory.

Taking the time to place a little description around your images and flash content can sometimes seriously improve your google pagerank and in turn improve your site’s traffic.
